Compost is becoming a particularly important application requiring large amounts of top soil. Increasingly, compost is being used as an alternative to natural topsoil in new
construction, landscape renovations and container gardens. Using compost in these type of applications is not only less expensive than purchasing topsoil, but it has often produced better results when trying to establish a healthy vegetative cover.
When used as a top dressing compost can stimulate plant growth, reduce pests and plant infestation, and improve soil structure. Placed over roots of plants, compost conserves water and stabilizes soil temperatures. In addition, when used as a mulch, compost keeps plants healthy by controlling weeds, providing slow release of nutrients and prevents soil erosion.
Recent studies in the California vineyards have indicated that the use of compost in the vineyard directly reduced erosion, provided additional water percolation as well as extra nutrients to effect healthy plant growth and production.
Many turf managers are now using compost in their top dressing applications based on its proven success in suppressing plant disease. Compost, when properly formulated, is teaming with nutrients and billions of microorganisms that stimulate turf establishment and increase its resistance to common turf diseases such as snow mold, brown patch and dollar spot.

The fertility for all of Natural Acres Compost comes from compost that is produced on the 525 acre farm in Millersburg, Pennsylvania. Compost is made with recycled food waste, farm waste, and more. Bread, dairy or meat products are not included in the compost. It all starts with food waste - by the truckload! Not only does Natural Acres compost all of our own farm waste, but we also receive food waste from outside manufacturing plants.
